ABSTRACT

Objective@# To explore the trajectory of the development of permanent caries in 12- to 16-year-old students in Liuyang and to provide a reference for the prevention and management of caries.@*Methods@#Primary and secondary school students who were registered within the Liuyang jurisdiction were screened for caries from September to November by the Liuyang Center for Disease Control and Prevention. A total of 7 297 students between the ages of 12 and 16 years with complete permanent dentition caries monitoring records and traceable deciduous dentition caries monitoring records were selected from 2013 to 2019, and a zero-inflated negative binomial-latent class growth model (ZINB-LCGM) was established to describe the trajectory of the development of individual caries using the decayed missing filled teeth (DMFT) indicators. @*Results@# DMFT of 12- to 16-year-old students in Liuyang were mainly decayed teeth (DT), with the majority occurring in the first permanent molar. According to the ZINB-LCGM model, the students were classified into three latent categories, "slow growth pattern" (28.55%), "rapid growth pattern" (6.59%), and "stable pattern" (64.86%), which followed different nonlinear caries growth trajectories. Females with deciduous teeth caries were more likely to have trajectories showing a “rapid growth pattern” and a “slow growth pattern”. There were significant differences in the trajectories between men and women, as well as between those with and without primary dentition caries. @*Conclusion @# The trajectory of the development of caries in 12-16-year-old students shows heterogeneity in terms of different developmental patterns of latent categories, suggesting that females with deciduous dental caries should receive more attention.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVEVitamin D receptor (VDR) has been proposed as a candidate gene for susceptibility to Parkinson's disease (PD). This study was set to assess the association between VDR gene Apa I and Taq I polymorphisms and PD in a Chinese Han population.

METHODSTwo hundred and eighty five sporadic PD patients and 285 healthy controls were genotyped for the Apa I and Taq I polymorphisms in VDR gene using polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) method.

RESULTSNo significant difference was detected in genotype or allele distribution of both Apa I and Taq I polymorphisms between PD patients and controls (P U+003E 0.05). No TT genotype for Taq I was found in the studied population. For Taq I, the distribution of genotype was significantly different between male PD patients and controls (U+03C7 2=4.187, P=0.032, OR=2.149, 95%CI: 1.011-4.567), and the frequency of T allele was significantly higher in male PD patients than male controls (U+03C7 2=3.867, P=0.036, OR=2.064, 95%CI: 0.989-4.307).

CONCLUSIONVDR gene Apa I polymorphisms are not associated with sporadic Parkinson's disease, but Taq I may be a risk factor for male PD.

ABSTRACT

Objective To investigate the effects of gene silencing of Fas-associated death domain (FADD) with synthetic small interfering RNA (siRNA) on apomorphine-induced contralateral rotation, and the expression of Fas and caspase-8 in rat models of parkinsonism. Methods Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into 5 groups:control group,Parkinson' s disease (PD) group,FADD siRNA group,FADD siRNA positive control group and FADD siRNA negative control group. Synthetic FADD siRNA sequences,siRNA positive sequences or siRNA negative sequences were infused into right substantianigra of midbrain using RNA interference and stereotactic techniques before parkinsonian rat model establishment.Apomorphine-induced contralateral rotations of the rats were observed after the injection. The protein and mRNA expression levels of FADD,Fas and caspase-8 were measured by Western blot and RT-PCR.Results In the control group,no rotation was observed after injecting apomorphine; however,in the rest groups, the number of rats respectively was 12 (12/14),3 (3/13),4 (4/15) and 11 ( 11/14 ) in apomorphine-induced contralateral rotation, which had significant statistical differences ( x2 = 18.56,P =0.000).In parkinsonian substantia nigra, marked increases in the protein and mRNA levels of FADD,Fas and caspase-8 were observed, compared with control group.Furthermore, compared with PD group,FADD protein and mRNA levels were strongly suppressed by administration of FADD siRNA in FADD siRNA group. FADD siRNA administration also resulted in great attenuation of 6-hydroxydopamine-induced increases in expression and activation of caspase-8.However,no decrease in expression of Fas was observed in FADD siRNA group and FADD siRNA positive control group, compared with PD group. Conclusion Our results suggest that death receptor signaling pathway plays a critical role in the pathogenesis of PD.FADD siRNA is effective against this pathway and it may,at least in part, provide a potential neuroprotective effect.

ABSTRACT

Objective To analyze the effectiveness of chronic disease management among suburb residents to secure an optimal health management model. Methods Since 2002, physical examinations had been conducted for rural residents aged≥40. Hypertensive patients detected on health check received medical evaluation and risk factor intervention. Results The incidence of high blood pressure decreased from 26.57% in 2002 to 11.99% in 2007-2008. The mortality of cerebrovascular disease declined from 68.00% to 5.26%. The incidence, disability rate, and death rate of hypertension related-stroke were also significantly reduced. Conclusion Primary healthcare center-based chronic disease screening, along with the health management network, can largely decrease the incidence, disability rate, and mortality of stroke associated with high blood pressure.

ABSTRACT

Objective To review physical examination data of farmers and provide suppoa for the establishment of a proper health management model. Methods More than 3700 farmers living at 11 villages of Xihongmen County in Daxing District of Beijing received healthcare education and essential physical examination from 2007 to 2008.The participants were also required to fill in a health questionnaire in 2008.Results In blood pressure and lipid profile measurement, statistical difference in body mass index was found between the farmers and healthy ubran residents (P<0.05).Conclusion Effective health management models should be explored and established in consideration of the characteristics of the farmers.

ABSTRACT

The architecture of the specialized myocardial fibers of the atrioventricular junction area(AVJ) were observed under microscope on serial sections. It was found that the human A-V node extend backward divergently to form two posterior extensions (left and right, LPE, RPE). The A-V node can be divided into a superficial layer and a deep layer, and the deep layer further divided into a upper part and a lower part. The fibers in the superficial layer are vertical, and join with the lower part of the deep layer at the anterior extremity of the node. The lower part of the deep layer is the main axis of the node. The fibers in the lower part of the deep layer are longitudinal, and join with the RPE at the posterior extremity of the node. The fibers in the upper part of the deep layer are oblique and join with the LPE at the posterior extremity of the node, and mix with the lower part at the anterior extremity. The longitudinal dissociation of the anterior part of the His bundle is more distinct than that of the posterior part. The lower-left part of the bifurcating part of the bundle extend to form the posterior left branch, the upper-left and upper-middle parts of the bifurcating part extend to form the anterior left branch, and the right part and lower-middle part of the bifurcating part extend to form the right bundle branch. The morphological evidence of the dual or multiple conducting pathways, the longitudinal dissociation and the reentry pathways in the AVJ were discussed.

ABSTRACT

The stereoscopic orientation of the lumbar zygapophyseal joints and the stability triangle of the motion segments were studied on 56 sets of adult lumbosacral skeletons. The orientation of the lumbar zygapophyseal joints changed gradually from about sagittal plane in upper segment to about coronal in lower. The gravity center of the stability triangle of the motion segments moved backward from upper to ower progressively. Therefore, the stability of lumbar spine decreases and the mobility increases successively from upper downward.
